Last night at the Planning Board in Portsmouth New Hampshire, we recommence
looking at the largest building ever proposed for this small, quaint, historic,
charming New England town on the banks of the Piscataqua River. It will be
50 percent larger than the recent monstrosity, Portwalk III - a building undistinguished
in everyway it is possible to be - 3 overlarge rectangular boxes joined together, then
covered in slightly varied facades, to give an impression of - what? I'm not sure.
(The great terraced town houses of Edwardian London? No. The brownstones of
New York? No. Well, whatever, some kind of Disney-fied reference to something like that)
But, we are not allowed to talk about the size - only drains, water, gas, and - wow -
landscaping!!! The trees that will be planted in containers, or into the actual ground,
and the tiny fragments of 'open space' around the building. But - because we're not
supposed to talk about the traffic either - 7000 (is it) extra cars a day, more at weekends;
2 or 3 (yes, that's all) tractor trailers DAILY, the propane trains, the box trucks (not
sure how many thousands of these yet) - there actually will only be the kind of open
space that we'll want to flee from!
